Did you like our previous post about the Ancient Olympic Games? One of the hallmarks of the classic disputes was that only men could participate. This restriction also prevented foreigners from participating: only Greeks could play.

However, there is the fascinating story of Bilistiche, which contradicts all this and today can serve as inspiration. Legend has it that she was a courtesan of uncertain origins, but some historians say she was a slave bought in the market.

In ways that even today do not know how, she entered the Olympic Games even though she was a woman and a foreigner. Then, she won the chariots race in the games of 264 B.C.

Perhaps as a result of the newly acquired fame, she became much disputed among men. She came to become lover of the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus, who went on to dub her Aphrodite Bilistiche, a reference to the goddess.

According to historians, Bilistiche was buried beneath a monument to Sarapis in Alexandria.

At various points in history, you can see great women standing out even where society prevented them. Let this be an inspiration for modern times!
