Preparation, by Heloisa Schurmann

One who goes to the sea, gets prepared on land!

To face the weather in Antarctica on board of a sailboat, you must have a careful preparation so to have your crew protected from the cold temperatures. With research and orientation from experienced explorers, we're choosing the clothing we'll wear in Antarctica.

Our clothing will have layers that can retain the body heat and at the same time eliminate the humidity from sweating.

We'll be wearing at least 4 layers of clothes:

  • 1 - Light, synthetic underwear;
  • 2 - Full sweat suit (pants and jacket) so to isolate the body temperature;
  • 3 - A thick third layer to keep the body warm;
  • 4 - A windproof, waterproof jacket. (Generally the bad weather wear.)

If we have extreme cold days we are even going to wear a fifth layer for warming. We have to keep heads, necks, feet and hands warm and dry. Wilhem and me tried on all the layers and I was so wrapped up I felt like a happy penguin. :)
